Faithful with the Seed

The sower’s calling is to scatter the good seed faithfully, while the Lord alone governs its fruitfulness. We must not let resistance, delay, or visible results determine whether we continue sharing His Word.

“Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow:” — Mark 4:3, KJV. Before the Lord Jesus described the different kinds of ground, He called His hearers to pay attention: “Hearken; Behold.” The simple picture of a sower going into his field carries a searching lesson for every believer. The sower possesses seed and has a field before him, so he goes out and sows. He does not keep the seed safely stored away, nor does he wait until every condition appears favourable. His responsibility is to scatter what has been entrusted to him. In the same way, Christians have received the Word of God not merely for private comfort, but also to share faithfully with others.

The sower cannot command the soil to receive the seed, and he cannot create life within it. Some hearers may seem indifferent. Others may respond quickly but show no lasting root. The cares and desires of this world may choke what once appeared promising. Yet these varied outcomes do not prove that the seed is defective or that faithful sowing is wasted. The Word of God remains true and powerful. Our part is to speak it accurately, lovingly, prayerfully, and without embarrassment. We must resist the temptation to alter the message merely to make it more acceptable, because a softened or substituted message is no longer the same seed the Lord entrusted to us.

This truth also guards us against discouragement. We naturally rejoice when someone receives the truth, grows in faith, or turns from sin to Christ. But when there is no immediate response, we may begin to believe that our witness has failed. The sower teaches us to distinguish obedience from visible success. A conversation that seems forgotten, a Scripture shared with a struggling friend, a lesson taught to restless children, or a quiet testimony offered to an unbelieving relative may remain in the heart longer than we know. God may use His Word after many days, in circumstances we never witness. We are not excused from loving patience, wise preparation, or clear teaching; nevertheless, the final outcome belongs to God rather than to us.

Faithful sowing therefore requires faithful prayer. R. A. Torrey wrote, “Prayer is the key that unlocks all the storehouses of God's infinite grace and power.” We should pray before speaking, asking God to prepare both our words and the hearer’s heart. We should pray afterward, entrusting the seed to His care rather than anxiously trying to force a result. We should also ask Him to examine our own hearts, for we remain hearers of His Word even while sharing it with others. Today, let us go out like the sower: attentive to opportunities, honest about the gospel, compassionate toward people, and confident in God. We may not control the harvest, but by His grace we can be faithful with the seed.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Your living and faithful Word. Forgive me for the times I have remained silent through fear, or measured obedience only by the response of others. Give me wisdom to speak Your truth clearly, humility to speak it gently, and courage to speak it faithfully. Prepare the hearts of those who hear, and guard me from trying to force what only You can produce. Teach me to pray before I sow, to trust You after I sow, and to persevere when no fruit is immediately visible. Make my own heart receptive and obedient to Your Word, and use my witness for the glory of Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
